DIY Butterfly Bookmarks - Easy Paper Craft Tutorial

Pretty

I thought I'd share this lovely bookmark idea with you, as someone who enjoys crafting unique, fun, and beautiful bookmarks.

How I Discovered This Idea?

I stumbled upon this brilliant concept on Pinterest whilst planning an activity for an Easter event at my local church for Muslim women. With a group of women and a couple of children taking part, I needed something suitable for all ages. This butterfly bookmark proved incredibly popular with everyone! (I also demonstrated a die-cut bookmark, but this activity was by far the favourite as many found the simple act of colouring quite therapeutic.)

I created my free template by scanning a sticker sheet and editing it to ensure the butterflies were perfectly centred on each end.

*Time required: 5-20 minutes

Right then, let's get started!

What You'll Need:

  • Printer for the template

  • Cardstock (200 gsm preferred for durability)

  • Colouring pencils or marker pens

  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions:

- Alternatively, you can follow along with the step-by-step video here😊

Step 1: Download the template

Step 2: Print the template onto cardstock (200 gsm is ideal for a sturdier bookmark that will last longer)

Step 3: Colour in the butterfly using your chosen colouring pencils or markers (it's best to colour your bookmark before cutting, as this makes the process much easier)

Step 4: Carefully cut around the bookmark using scissors

Step 5: Folding the bookmark: First, fold the bookmark in half diagonally, ensuring both butterfly wings are properly aligned. Then fold the butterfly outwards so the wings are visible when you insert it between book pages.

Step 6: Add finishing touches, such as a meaningful message on the side (perhaps a scripture verse) or draw a stem if you've chosen the flower design.

Step 7: There are two extra blank templates for your designs—simply draw one half and mirror it on the opposite side. I've done a smiley face and a heart as examples, but you could create a dinosaur, train, aeroplane, compass, or anything else that takes your fancy. Be creative!

Step 8: Your bookmark is now complete! You can place it either on the side of your book or on top of the pages.
